How to Help Your Students Find the Right Jobs Using Labor Insight

Every educator wants their students to graduate and find a successful job. But with the pace of change in today’s workforce, it can be difficult to pinpoint the skills and roles employers are looking for. So how can you easily find out what employers want and communicate that to your students?  

To find the right jobs for your students’ skill sets, you can look at local and regional job demand in Labor Insight™. Labor Insight is a user-friendly data analytics tool used by many higher education institutions across the nation. It provides the most up-to-date information on skills and occupations based on actual job postings.  

One useful way higher education institutions are using Labor Insight is in the career services department. Advisors can help students explore the regional and national job markets while giving guidance on resumes, skills development, and reaching out to potential employers together. 

Labor Insight allows you to find jobs by region, granular occupation groups, skill requirements, salary, education, and more. In this article, we’ll look at one example: investigating demand for Computer Science majors in the Boston metro area. Keep in mind, you can use Labor Insight to search for jobs for any major in any U.S. location.

A Real Example of Labor Insight Reporting 

To find opportunities for Computer Science majors in the Boston area, you can simply choose to run a report on Occupations that are available in the Boston metro area. You’ll want to select occupations that require a bachelor’s degree or higher and require computer science skills. 

Labor Insight actually gives you two options to do this. You can search by Standard Occupational Classifications, which are the government’s official categories for occupations. You can also search by the Burning Glass proprietary occupation categories, known as BGTOCCs. The BGTOCCs are both more frequently updated and more granular than the SOCs. For example, the Burning Glass categories include roles like UI/UX Designer and Mobile App Developer, which are not yet part of the SOCs.

Once you’ve created the report, you can see all of the Computer Science occupations available in the Boston area. As you can see, there is a high demand for Computer Programmers (12.6%), Software Developers/Engineers (12.6%), and Data Scientists (10.4%). 

You can then drill into each of the specific job titles to see which skills are required for the role. For instance, a Computer Programmer needs to have the skills shown in the below image (Data Science, Python, Java, Machine Learning, etc…) in order to be qualified for the job. Viewing local job listings with your students will help verify whether or not the student is ready for the job they’re interested in, or if they should pursue a different occupation. If students are missing any of the required skills, then they should take additional courses to fulfill all of the requirements.  

This information can also provide guidance for your institution’s programs. For example, if you see that your Computer Science programs are not teaching Oracle or Machine Learning, which are highly required, then you’ll want to add these skills to your program, ensuring they’re aligned with the skills employers in your area are asking for. This will help to guarantee your students will be well qualified for employment when they graduate.
