Labor dept. revs its new search engine, says it will help jobseekers customize resumes

The New Jersey Department of Labor showed off its new job search engine yesterday at the One-Stop Career Center on Broad Street in Newark. Jobseekers can use the search engine, which appears on Jobs4Jersey.com, to comb through listings on 2,4000 websites, and next month employers will be able to post openings to OnRamp directly.

Burning Glass Real-Time LMI Data Provides Insight into U.S. Manufacturing Jobs

The Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness has released its analysis of the U.S. manufacturing sector for the first half of 2011. Burning Glass’s granular jobs data, which uses our patented technology to extract detailed information from online job postings, including number of openings and employer requirements for skills, experience, education, certifications, etc., served as the data source. The report provides insight into employment trends for the manufacturing sector, including:

  • Only 9% of almost 669,000 online job openings were production-related
  • Jobs were concentrated in major metropolitan areas along the Atlantic seaboard, in the Midwest, and in Texas and California
  • Almost 25% of jobs were in just three industries (computer & peripheral equipment manufacturing, aerospace product & parts manufacturing, and pharmaceutical & medicine manufacturing)
  • Openings were concentrated in sales and management, engineering, and production occupations requiring significant prior work experience
  • More than 50% of all jobs required more than a HS diploma, with approx. 25% of production-related jobs requiring more than a HS diploma
  • Only 7% of jobs included a stated certification requirement, with many of those related to lean manufacturing

Burning Glass's Real-Time Labor Market Data To Help Colleges Align Curriculum to Needs of Regional Economies

Using Burning Glass’s advanced technologies for collecting and analyzing real-time labor market information (LMI), Jobs for the Future has launched Credentials that Work, a network of 10 community colleges in six states. This new initiative, funded by the Joyce and Lumina Foundations, explores the potential of using real-time LMI to transform how post-secondary institutions and systems align occupational training programs with actual employer demand.
